Clomid (Clomiphene)
General information
Clomid is a so called fertility drug. This medication belongs to the class of medications known as ovulatory agents. It helps women to achieve pregnancy. It works inducing ovulation. The medicine stimulates production of follicle-stimulating hormone in the pituitary gland. It increases the amount of 3 hormones luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and gonadotropin-releasing hormone. As a result the body is tricked to believe that levels of estrogen are low and ovaries mature more follicles.
Directions
The recommended dose is 50 mg per day before going to sleep. You should start to take Clomid from the 5th day of your menstrual cycle during 5 days. In case of no effect the dosage can be increased up to 150 mg. The maximum dose for this medication is 100 mg daily for 5 days. It is recommended not to use this medication for more than 6 cycles of treatment.
Precautions
Before starting your treatment with Clomid please inform your doctor if you have an allergy to clomiphene, liver diseases, mental depression, thrombophlebitis. The medicine can cause dizziness vision problems, or lightheadedness.
Contraindications
The patients with the following conditions can't use Clomid: hypersensitivity, metrorrhagia, ovarian cysts, neoplasms of genital organs, thrombophlebitis, liver or kidney failure, tumor or hypofunction of the hypophysis, endometriosis, ovarian failure together with hyperprolactinaemia, pregnancy.
Possible side effect
Common side effects are the following: hives, nausea, swelling of lips, tongue, or face, ovarian enlargement presenting as abdominal or pelvic pain, flushing, vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision, breast discomfort, restlessness, trouble sleeping, headache, abnormal uterine bleeding. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Drug interaction
Before starting you treatment tell your doctor about all the medicines you are using. An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
Storage
Store the medicine in a dry place away from sunlight at room temperature between 15-30 C (59-86 F).
